Worrier vs Warrior

Updated: Mar 4, 2023

Matthew 6:25 That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life- whether you have enough food and drink or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food and your body more than clothing? Matthew 6:33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

I can say with confidence that we are probably all guilty of worrying about something. I worry about doing well on my job, if I have enough money saved for unforeseen circumstances, if my life is going to play out the way I think would be best. Often times we can become consumed with thoughts about things that according to Matthew 6 shouldn’t even plague our minds. In fact in Matthew 6:31 Jesus tells us that worrying about such things are actually the way that unbelievers think.

So is Jesus really telling us what it seems like he’s saying so plainly? Yes! Yes he is. So why is it so simple? In verse 33 above Jesus gives the caveat to why you shouldn’t worry about life. He tells us to seek the Kingdom of God above all else AND LIVE RIGHTEOUSLY and all these things will be added unto you. In essence what Jesus is saying here is that if you do what you’re supposed to do concerning me I’ll make sure you’re taken care of. So no, you can’t live your life the way you want to and expect that this promise applies. This promise applies to those who go after being in right standing with God and seeking to truly live according to the standards he has set. I think preachers love to teach on verse 25 above but don’t want to thoroughly explain the conditions given in verse 33.

So no, you have absolutely no reason to worry about anything in this life at all when you first seek to please God. You don’t have to worry about where your money will come from. You don’t have to worry about if you’ll “make it” in life. You don’t have to worry about how certain things are going to play out in life because Romans 8:28 tells us that God causes all things to work together for the good of those that love the Lord. I am a personal testament to this. Nothing that I have has come to me because I followed the perfect plan to bring these things about. Yes, I am blessed beyond measure, but that’s all because God has been gracious enough to supply these things as I seek to please him.

Here’s another reality check. The things that we tend to worry about as humans are petty to God. Your bills and loans are little money compared to what our King owns. That job you want and the salary you seek is meager compared to what God can give you. That relationship that you seek after is an absolute joke compared to the love that God has for you.

So what is it that worries you? What is it that consumes your mind as you struggle to figure out how that thing is going to work out? My encouragement to you would be to stop doing God’s job for him. If you can figure out the plan for your life then why do you need him? If you have all the answers then why pray? Stop insulting God with your doubt and disbelief as if he’s incapable of working your situation out and start to concern yourself with the things of God. Let us not forget that one day this world that we know will cease to be. So let’s spend our time being sure that we’re prepared for our eternity rather than investing in something that will one day be a thing of the past. Think about that. If you could see into the future and knew that something was going to fail to exist down the road then you would change your mind about how much time you invest into that thing. Well…that’s the reality of the world that we live in.
